With films like Dune: Part Two, Challengers and Inside Out 2 taking the box office by storm in the first half of 2024, we thought it would be a good time to dive into the rest of the films that Team Gate are excited for this year…
The announcement of this sequel to the 2000 epic came as a surprise to most with the ending of the original in mind, begging the question: ‘how on Earth are they going to resurrect Maximus Decimus Meridius, Father to a Murdered Son, Husband to a Murdered Wife (who WILL have his vengeance in this life or the next)?’
Simply put, they’re not! Casting the next big thing in Paul Mescal as returning character Lucius, Ridley Scott seems to be taking this story in a fresh direction, although playing in the same arena (or amphitheater if you will) as the first. Content Creator Robbie is especially excited for this one…
With 2017’s harrowing portrayal of a hero in his final days, we thought Logan would be the last we see of Hugh Jackman’s animalistic loner Wolverine. But as tinseltown loves a heroic comeback, Wrexham FC’s very own Ryan Reynolds has seemingly convinced Jackman to pop his claws one more time.
Serving as the third installment to the Deadpool trilogy, this threequel promises Marvel Crossover’s galore, more edgy comedy then you can shake an adamantium claw at and maybe a Swift cameo from a certain mega star (look it up)…
This one is going to be quite 'popular’ in the office, with the team usually retooling the said musical number to fit a certain Senior Producer’s name (it’s incredibly catchy).
With Cynthia Ervo and pop star Ariana Grande heading up the first half of this adaptation of the Broadway sensation; fan’s are curiously anticipating whether the film will be able to reach the same gravity defying heights of the musical.
All together now: Joshua, you’re gonna be Joshuuuuua!
This remake, directed by Robert Eggers’, has been hotly anticipated since its announcement, with horror fans chomping at the bit for a slice of Gothic Vampire action. Steeped in German Expressionism, Nosferatu was initially an unauthorised adaptation of the Bram Stoker classic Dracula, until it became the iconic tentpole for gothic horror.
With an all-star cast, including Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgaard as the fiendish Count Orlok; this certainly promises to bring some frights to the back end of 2024.
The long-awaited sequel to the 90s classic Twister; this summer blockbuster promises to do to Twister what Aliens did to Alien - take the original and pluralise it! In all seriousness, this looks to be a fresh take on the original, promising exciting thrills and anxiety inducing chills.
Starring the new hot thing in Hollywood, Glen Powell, a man who appears to have been genetically engineered in a lab; we’re excited to see this nostalgic call back to the 90s classic.
‘Imagine Silence of the Lambs, but at a Taylor Swift concert’ - that was the pitch for this M Night Shyamalan thriller. Without spoiling too much, Josh Hartnett stars as a father taking his teenage daughter to a pop concert before we find out it’s a sting operation to catch a serial killer…
With expected Shyamalan twists around every corner, we have a ‘sixth sense’ that this game of cat and mouse is going to be more than it seems from the initial trailer.
The juice is indeed loose - or will be by the time this long awaited sequel comes to the big screen. With all the main players returning, including Tim Burton, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, we’re expecting this gothic comedy to bring more laughs and gruesome gaffes to the Underworld.
Coming off the back of his recent hit series Wednesday, Burton seems to be on form at the minute and Team Gate are hoping this doesn’t change that!
Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix returns to the world of Gotham here as the Clown Prince of Crime in this sequel to the 2019 smash hit Joker. Featuring Lady Gaga as the Joker’s partner-in-crime come lover come plaything Harley Quinn, Folie Á Deux promises to bring something fresh and exciting to the already saturated history of Batman and his villains on the big screen.
With rumors that this is going to be a musical, we cannot wait to see what Phoenix and Gaga bring to the big screen here in this 70s set Scorsese-esque Gotham crime sequel.
What can Disney say, except you’re welcome? Oh yes, in the world of sequels, remakes, reboots and prequels, Moana got a sequel. Whilst this writer wants to express their unadulterated joy that the wonderful, charming and inventive 2016 instant classic is getting a sequel, we can’t help but feel a little disappointed. The first Moana was a lovely film that felt like a breath of fresh air in the slate of Disney’s most recent animated flops and I sat with crossed fingers and legs that they would leave it alone…forever.
But no, the House of Mouse just couldn’t help themselves could they? No.
With a returning cast including Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson, Auliʻi Cravalho and Nicole Sherzinger, we’re EXTREMELY excited about this one, and I mean REALLY excited. So much so, that we can barely contain it. Although we’re happy to be proven wrong…
*sigh* (INSERTS FUN PUNNY REFERENCE TO A SONG FROM THE ORIGINAL LIKE ‘WE JUST CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS ONE’ OR ‘BE PREPARED’ OR ‘CIRCLE OF LIFE’) well you know what, this is the Circle of Life, isn’t it? That circle being Disney makes something good and original and then finds a way to churn the life out of it for years to come.
Was the original not enough? The original sequel ‘Simba’s Pride’ just didn’t do it for you? The Broadway adaptation not making enough bank for you? The live action 2019 remake not drain the life out of it enough for you? When is enough, Disney? We can’t help thinking they’re taking the ‘mickey’ with this now…
Okay okay, impartial writing, unbiased point of view activated - this *seems* to be an extremely promising entry to the franchise, with the Moonlight director Barry Jenkins at the helm, we’re hoping this prequel telling the story of a young Mufasa brings something worth watching to the screens. Be prepared…
