At the Gate, we believe you can't beat sitting down, sticking the telly on and putting on your favourite film... and with it being Mental Health Awareness Week; we believe there is no exception here. We asked Team Gate all about their comfort watches; those films or TV shows where you can just sit back and be transported away from your worries to another world, time or feeling altogether...
Sasha - Filmographer: The film used to absolutely terrify me as a child, and rightfully so...it's really freaky! But something about the animation, attention to detail and absolute belter of a soundtrack sits close to my heart. I never get bored of popping this film on, especially when I have other tasks to do, it's just nice to hear it in the background whilst I'm occupying myself with other things. It helps me concentrate on tedious tasks like dishes and laundry, meaning I'm being productive whilst feeling relaxed!
Megan - Junior Editor: We watched it in year 6 and it just reminds me of simpler times. It's an easy watch aside from those horrible London scenes.
Hannah - Production Assistant: It's all dancing, joke telling and the most beautiful makeup, hair & costumes. Also promotes inclusivity, positivity & love, whilst still having those gag worthy reality tv moments.
The Proposal (2009) & Daddy's Home (2015)
Katie - Sales & Marketing Executive: Both films make me laugh but also super wholesome! I always watch these to lift my spirits! Maybe something about Will & Mark Walberg – same for Sandra & Ryan – familiar faces are comforting and you know the films are going to be great with these actors.
Simon - CEO: When I was young it was because I wanted to be Danny, and now it’s because it takes me back to a place where all I had to worry about was my hair, my clothes and how I danced in a night club. Hang on, not much has changed…
Robbie - Content Creator: Oh what a day, what a lovely day! 'Comfort' means different things to different people; to some it could be a night in with a loved one, or getting into fresh bedding after a tough day, but to me, comfort is a 2-hour car chase through the desert to the sound a flame-throwing guitar. This film just makes me feel whole in all honesty, it's that intense and relentless that it gives you no time to ponder on the worries of the day, or the problems in your life. It's a no-holds-barred action masterpiece that George Miller has brought to life and as soon as Tom Hardy's grizzly VO comes in with the 'My Name Is Max': I am immediatley transported to the troubles of the Wasteland and away from the worries of my own life.
Alice - Production Manager: My comfort and guilty pleasure is Coronation Street, from Birrmingham I had always watched the cobbles growing up it was the time that my dad pulled up on the drive from his day at work and the time that we all sat round the TV and decompressed after a long day, something that my Grandma watched and something that I have always kept up with a comfort a go to programme for me and my family, no matter how long or boring the storyline may be I am always hooked and it is a constant in my house even now.
The Lady and The Tramp (1955), The Little Mermaid (1989) & The Lion King (1994)
Rhiannon - Executive Producer: My comfort films are any of the old Disney films I used the watch when I was a kid– The Lion King, The little mermaid, Lady and the tramp. I love snuggling up on the sofa with my kids under a blanket and sniffing their heads as we watch them together. The combination of childhood nostalgia and dopamine from the hugs always brings me ultimate comfort.
Chloe - Video Editor: It's a comforting, wholesome, funny show that I grew up watching.
